War!
Terror, the ear splitting sound of gun fire; bombs exploding; the blood of men and women and children splattering, spreading, and finally seeping into the earth reminding the living of lives gone forever.
War. Just a word in the context of history, in the storybooks. But, in the here and now as we look into the face of tomorrow the word is suddenly, against our will, very real.
We, the ordinary people living our ordinary lives, remain mostly untouched by the destruction on the other side of the world. We watch and even hear the guns exploding, the inferno of buildings and lives blasted to hell, but it has no reality - just one more drama unfolding.
War. We of the Western world have lived a generation without it. We have had no test of courage or comradeship. There has been no rallying cry of 'For home and hearth!'
This war, like all others in the history of man, will come and go. The scary feeling in the pit of our stomachs will subside as the given outcome becomes a reality. We will raise our flags and fists in victory.  Then, after our brief moment of being voyeurs of another life, another world, we will return to the even plain of our existence, giving no thought or care to the battles fought or the lives lost every day in the fight for freedom and dignity, which should be inherent with simply being human.
Perfection.
